SMU ASoc - Professional Development

Home > Events > Professional Development

Why do we exist?

The professional development arm is an initiative unique to ASoc among the CBDs,
with its roots extending from the 3rd management committee.

Professional Development forms an important part of the Accounting Community, primarily;
its aims can be derived from its name:

Profession
As future accountants, we are all on the path to emerge as professionals. The technical skills and lessons that we obtain during our 4 years of study, within and outside of the seminar room, will make up our fundamentals when we venture out into the working world.

Development
Thus, it is especially important that in these 4 years, we are able to develop our technical and soft skills, to prepare us for the demanding conditions that lay ahead, because on the professional level, nothing differentiates you more than the skills that you possess. Having or not having these skills will make or break your professional career.

“Be a part of the development initiative. Ultimately, the choice to develop lies in you.”

What do we do?

Professional development refers to skills and knowledge attained for both personal development and career advancement. In Asoc, PD focuses on organizing extra-curricular activities for the benefit of SMU Accountancy students. We actively approach and collaborate with accounting related professional bodies and organizations to host or initiate talks, events, and programs. Through these activities, we hope to further the students’ interest and knowledge of accounting-related subjects.

Due to the interconnectedness of accountancy and business, this year, Asoc PD will also aim to provide our students with greater exposure beyond the scope of accounting. The increasing trend of accounting students entering the banking and finance industry indicates such growing interest among our students. Even for those who intend to work in accounting firms upon graduation, a deeper understanding of how the banking and finance industry functions will allow them to appreciate their operational workflows and perform more effectively in their future careers.

Apart from working each accounting cohort, PD will also aim to provide Asoc students with the opportunity to network with peers with the same interest residing in other local universities. This can be achieved through more networking sessions and events conducted by the respective schools. Hence, our events will also be categorized under cohort, school, university, and national levels, in line with Asoc direction to forge vertical and horizontal integration among our students.
